MASS S.r.l.: Life Cycle Assessment of a Motorcycle Exhaust System

Circular S.r.l. supported MASS S.r.l. in conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts associated with the production of a complete motorcycle exhaust system.

The assessment, carried out in accordance with the international standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, provides a scientific framework for integrating environmental considerations into manufacturing processes and supporting improvements in product environmental performance.

Who is MASS?

MASS S.r.l. is an artisanal company based in Misilmeri, near Palermo, Sicily, specialising in the design and manufacture of motorcycle exhaust systems for the international market.

The company combines traditional craftsmanship with specialised manufacturing technologies, paying particular attention to detail, aesthetic quality and technical performance. Each exhaust system undergoes bench testing to verify its functionality and efficiency.

Its manufacturing activities include cutting, forming, welding, assembly and packaging.

The Collaboration with Circular

Circular supported MASS in conducting a Life Cycle Assessment of the Hot Rod Catalytic motorcycle exhaust system, designed for the Triumph Bonneville 1200.

The study adopted a cradle-to-gate approach, covering the stages from raw material supply to the packaging of the finished product, while excluding the use and end-of-life phases.

The consultancy activities included:

  1. Definition of the study objectives, functional unit and system boundaries.
  2. Analysis of the materials and components used in the exhaust system.
  3. Collection of data on energy, water and material consumption, as well as waste generated during manufacturing.
  4. Assessment of the main production stages: cutting, forming, welding, assembly and packaging.
  5. Development of the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI).
  6. Environmental modelling using SimaPro software and the ecoinvent database.
  7. Assessment of potential environmental impacts using the CML Baseline methodology.
  8. Interpretation of the assessment to support the identification of potential environmental improvement strategies.

The methodology considers several environmental impact categories, including climate change, acidification, eutrophication, resource depletion, toxicity and ecotoxicity.

Why Apply LCA to the Motorcycle Industry?

Manufacturing motorcycle components involves raw materials, metalworking processes, energy consumption and logistics activities, all of which can contribute to a product's environmental footprint.

Life Cycle Assessment provides a scientific and systematic approach to evaluating these aspects across the life cycle stages included within the study boundaries.

By applying LCA, companies can integrate environmental considerations into product design, material selection, manufacturing processes and supply chain management.

Circular supports companies in assessing the environmental impacts of products and processes through Life Cycle Assessment studies in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

From data collection and life cycle modelling to environmental impact interpretation, Circular provides scientifically based tools to support ecodesign, production process optimisation and the development of evidence-based sustainability strategies.
