Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, Circularity and Reuse

Circular Srl's Scientific Advisor, Prof. Marzia Traverso, Professor and Director of the Institute of Sustainability in Civil Engineering (INaB) at RWTH Aachen University, participated in a new episode of the Library of Reuse podcast, published on 16 September 2026, sharing her scientific expertise on sustainability, circular economy and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA).

The interview, conducted by Heidi Silvennoinen, PhD researcher at the CEA Lab and the Block Research Group at ETH Zurich, together with Catherine De Wolf, addresses a fundamental question: how can we determine whether circularity and reuse are truly sustainable?

The discussion explores the role of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, which enables the joint evaluation of environmental, economic and social impacts throughout the entire life cycle of products, materials and systems.

The conversation also examines the complexity of assessing trade-offs between different sustainability dimensions, the need to harmonise assessment methodologies, and the importance of adapting Life Cycle Assessment approaches to better integrate and anticipate the effects of material and component reuse.

At the beginning of the interview, Prof. Traverso discusses the meaning of sustainability and circularity, explaining how these two concepts are closely interconnected but not equivalent. A circular solution is not necessarily sustainable: its actual environmental, social and economic performance must be evaluated using scientifically robust methodologies.

This topic is particularly relevant to Circular Srl, which promotes a life cycle approach as a fundamental tool for translating sustainability and circularity into measurable results and informed decision-making.
